It’s an agent that can actually do things — call cloud APIs, touch identity stores, open tickets, and push remediation. That’s a different class of failure. A bad answer is annoying. A bad action is an incident.
I’ve investigated enough breaches to be suspicious of anything that can move from “suggest” to “execute” without a human pause. The next ugly surprise won’t be a prompt injection that leaks a summary. It’ll be an agent using valid credentials, inherited permissions, and a clean audit trail to make a destructive change you never meant to authorize. The logs will look tidy right up until they don’t.

That matters because the industry already knows what happens when an automated system gets trusted too much. SolarWinds showed how a compromised software supply chain can turn a “trusted” update path into a breach amplifier. Midnight Blizzard showed how weak identity hygiene and a legacy tenant can hand an attacker a foothold into source code and internal systems. Agentic tools sit in the same danger zone: they are supply-chain software with live credentials and operational authority.
The likely 2026 failure mode is simple. You connect an agent to AWS, Azure, Okta, GitHub, Jira, and your CNAPP. You give it enough permissions to triage findings, rotate keys, and remediate misconfigurations. Why the real weakness is identity, not model quality
The defensive gap is identity, not intelligence. If your agent can assume a role in AWS IAM, write to Microsoft Entra ID, or trigger a CI/CD remediation job, then the model’s “reasoning” matters less than the permissions behind it.
A second flaw is that agentic systems collapse separation of duties. Traditional workflows at least force a human to approve a change in one system and execute it in another. Agentic remediation often bundles detection, decision, and action into one loop. That’s efficient, and efficiency is exactly how you end up with a cloud account disabled because the agent misread an alert, or a privileged group pruned because a retrieval index was stale. Automation is wonderful right up until it proves you were the bottleneck.
There’s also a supply-chain issue hiding in plain sight. If your threat model doesn’t include your own AI integrations, it isn’t a threat model; it’s a wish. Boring controls still work: least privilege, network segmentation, and audit logs.
Put hard approvals around destructive actions. Key rotations, privilege changes, security group edits, and remediation in production should require human confirmation or at least a second control plane with independent policy checks. If you already require change tickets for humans, don’t hand an agent a faster lane just because it can type JSON. That’s not innovation; that’s self-sabotage with better throughput.
Red-team your own AI integrations before an attacker does. Test prompt injection against ticketing systems, poisoned documents in retrieval pipelines, and malicious instructions hidden in cloud resource metadata. Exercise the exact paths Tenable is warning about: cloud APIs, CIEM workflows, and automated remediation. If your agent can be convinced to “fix” an issue by widening access, you have built an escalation path, not a defense tool.
Finally, instrument the thing like it’s production malware. Log every tool call, every token exchange, every role assumption, and every remediation decision. Alert on unusual action sequences, not just failed logins. A model that can open a Jira ticket and then change an IAM policy should leave a trail you can reconstruct in court, not just in a vendor dashboard. Compliance frameworks will happily collect screenshots while your agent empties a bucket; actual defense requires evidence that maps to actions.
Bottom line
Agentic AI changes the question from “what did the model say?” to “what did the model do with your credentials?” That is where the damage lives: identity, cloud control, and automated remediation.
Treat agents as untrusted operators. Limit their permissions, separate recommendation from execution, require human approval for destructive changes, and test the exact integrations they depend on for prompt injection and poisoned inputs. If you can’t explain and reconstruct every action an agent can take, you don’t have automation. You have a fast way to create your next incident.
